Cannibis Sativa Essay Example For Students
Cannibis Sativa Essay Throughout history marijuana has been used to serve various purposes in many differentcultures. The purposes have changed over timeto fit in with the current lifestyles. This pattern is also true in American history. The use of marijuana has adapted to the socialclimate of the time. Marijuana, whose scientific name is cannibissativa, was mentioned in historical manuscriptsas early as 2700 B. C. in China. (Grolier ElectronicEncyclopedia, 1995). The cultivation of the marijuana plant began as far back as the Jamestown settlers, around 1611, who used hempproduced from the marijuana plants fibers to make rope and canvas. It was also used in making clothing because of its durability. These uses fit in with the social climate of the time, because the main focus was on survival rather than for psychoactive purposes. During the prohibition, marijuana was widely used because of the scarcity of alcohol. Prohibitionwas repealed after just thirteen years while the prohibitionagainst marijuana lasted for more than seventy five years. This double standard may have resulted from the wishes of those in power. Alcohol prohibition struck directly at tens of millions of Americans of all ages, including many of societies most powerful members. Marijuana prohibition threatened far fewer Americans, and they had relatively little influence in the districts of power. Only the prohibition of marijuana, which some sixty million Americans have violated since 1965 has come close to approximating the prohibition experience, but marijuana smokers consist mostly of young and relatively powerless Americans (American Heritage, pg 47). Alcohol prohibition was repealed and marijuana prohibition was retained, not because scientists had proved that alcohol was the less dangerousof the various psychoactive drugs, but because of the prejudicesand preferences of most Americans (American Heritage, pg 47). In 1937 the government issued the Marijuana Tax Act, which levied a dollar an ounce tax on marijuana, coupled with fines of $2,000 for drug posession and jail sentences for evasion of the tax. For thisreason marijuana use in the United States appearsto have gone into decline in the late 30s(Grolier Wellness Encyclopedia, pg 54). Then marijuana was outlawed in 1937 as arepressive measure against Mexican workerswho crossed the border seekingjobs duringthe Depression. The specific reason given for the outlawing of the hemp plant was itssupposed violent effect on the degenerate races(Schaffer, pg. 86). Beginning in the 60s marijuana use saw aresurgence which may be attributed to manycauses. One of the main causes was the rebellion of youth against the Vietnam War. They used marijuana as an escape from war to peace. It was easy at this time to depict marijuana as a beneficial and completely harmless substancewhose effects were far less harmful than thoseof legal drugs such as alcohol and nicotinebecause there was not enough scientificresearch done during the 60s (Grolier Wellness Encyclopedia, pg 54). Another cause may have been the discovery ofthe psychoactive component of marijuana-tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as THC. Users found the relation between the doses andthe effects (Grolier Electronic Publishing, 1995). The current atmosphere provides for doctors tosuggest synthetic marijuana (THC) in a pure andstandardized form by perscription (called Marinol)for the treatment of nausea associated with cancer chemotherapy. Also, although there is noscientific evidence that shows marijuanais beneficial in the treatment of glaucoma,it may prevent the progression of visual loss. Marijuana, along with alcohol and a host ofother substances, can actually lower intraoculareye pressure. The mediction however, must be carefully tailored to the individual to prevent further eye damage. .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72 , .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72 .postImageUrl , .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72 , .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72:hover , .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72:visited , .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72:active { border:0!important; } .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72:active , .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72 .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub5c50afc5cb5dedac97c48652c2d1f72:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Story About Best Friends EssayThe evidence has clearly shown that marijuana has been around for a great deal of timeand has served multiple purposes throughout history. Surface Modifications-Free-Samples for Students-Myassignmenthelp
Question: Literature Review on the Topic of Surface Modifications with a Purpose of Depositing Lipids. Answer: Introduction It is very difficult to study complex natural cell membrane due to their native states. Lipids with the simpler model system are hence admirable for studying biomolecule interaction as well as the particular role of the component of the membrane. The suitable choice of the model will highly depend on the method employed for the scrutiny(Ottova-Leitmannova, 2015). Every model selected will have both disadvantage and advantage. The bilayers of lipids can be made on the solid support through using multiple methods including Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and LS (Langmuir Scaefer ). This method can be done in situ but LS and LB methods will need deposition of just a monolayer at a time by the help of Langmuir fil balance. This method is preferred for the bilayer deposition having a specific and controlled asymmetric leaflet composition. The most common method of preparing model cellular membrane is (DIBB) Droplet Interface Bilayer method. In this technique, the lipid bilayer is made from two water droplets which are submerged in oil and also coated with a monolayer of lipids. This can be either control, asymmetric or symmetric each droplet composition bilayer tailoring can be realized(Lemons, 2012). In addition, the solution on either side of the membrane is able to be controlled permitting for studies of the interactions in the membrane and specific bimolecular. This technique was employed recently to reconstitute bilayer of lipids from the total extract of model cell membrane known as Escharia coli. Surface Sensitive Methods To Study Supported Lipid Bilayers And MolecularInteractions With Them Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation. The inherent properties of the piezoelectric quartz can be keenly analyzed using QCM-D to trigger oscillation in the sensor, this will respond by deforming immediately when an external voltage is subjected to it(Ratner, 2012). The standing shear waves will be developed in the two gold electrodes due to the application of the alternating voltage. The shear wave will decay into the liquid having the characteristic length of decay. This length is always taken as 250nm, this for the crystal which is immersed in a pure water hence, this will give a perfect range of detection for the QCM-D. A solvent will be identified as a mass which is coupled with a mean thickness conforming to ?L. Where ?L is taken as the density of the liquid. The length of decay will vary with the following equation(Auernhammer, 2011). ; where nL is the absolute density of the liquid. Hence, if the solvent is exchanged with another one having higher viscosity, it will trigger an increase in the mean thickness detected by the crystal. The principle for the operation of QCM.D is based on the relationship between the change in frequency and the change in mass of sensor crystal. For such setup, if a change in mass is taken as m and change in frequency is taken as f, then from the simple Sauerbrey relationship m=-C* f/n. where C is the material specific Saurbray constant which is given as C=tg*?q/f0 and n is the harmonic number. Tq is the thickness of the quartz while ?q is the density of the quartz(Rotello, 2014). QCM-D basically records the wet adsorbed and not the dry ones since other optical techniques like ellipsometry, reflectometry and surface plasmon will do. This can be evident as an asset of the QCM-D method because it includes a tool needed for complementary info for the adsorbed layer in several liquid environments and also in combination with other surface sensitive methods(Smentkowski, 2011). The following diagrams show principle in dissipation and frequency change in the QCM-D. Fig 1: Dissipation Fig 2: Signals generated from a soft vesicle layer. AFM and the setup for imaging under continuous flow conditions. For AFM, the topology can be envisaged thru the interaction of resulting force on the tip upon scanning the surface and a sharp tip. Through scanning the surface in the pattern of the raster as well as sensing the position of laser beam sensor(Iglic, 2013). Depending on the material and the reason for the study, the AFM is operated in several modes like contact, tapping or noncontact mode. Zasadzinski used lipid AFM imaging on a lipid layer in 1991, these lipid bilayers were 1,2- dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine, from that date a plethora of membrane scrutiny has been done using AFM. The below diagrams shows how AFM utilizes the interatomic forces amid a sharp tip and a surface. Fig 3. a) shows AFM utilizes interatomic forces b) Shows the optimized AFM AFC setup based on gravity. Neutron reflection This is the very powerful method employed for studying thin adsorbed layer because it gives more info on the structural features in the direction which is orthogonal to the interface having a resolution with few Angstrom(Crdenas, 2012). The sketch of a neuron beam impinging on the surface is shown below; Fig4: a) shows neuron beam sketch b) shows neuron scattering in a silicon block and c) shows simulated reflectivity curve. Formation Of Supported Lipid Bilayers By Vesicle Fusion, The Case For Single Component And Fluid Lipid Systems QCM-D is a highly sensitive method more so for the viscous layer which has a large amount of water. This shows a reason QCM-D has become a stronghold for learning the formation of SLB through vesicle formation. But AFM excels for in-plane imaging for morphology in the layer of adsorbed having lateral resolution to few nm and Angstrom resolution in the x-axis orientation. NR is as well very sensitive to the buried interface but less sensitive to a diffuse water-rich structure like vesicle. References Auernhammer, G. (2011). ACT Score Range Whats Good
ACT Score Range What's Good SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If youââ¬â¢re planning on taking the ACT, youââ¬â¢re probably wondering what you can expect in terms of scores. In this article, Iââ¬â¢ll take you through the basics of how the test is scored, show you where your scores fall in relation to other students, and give you a few tips on how to plan your studying to meet your goals. ACT Score Range: The Basics On the ACT, your composite score can be anywhere from a 1 to a 36.Unlike the SAT, the composite score is not the sum of the scores of the other tests - itââ¬â¢s the average. The ACT has four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. Each one is also scored on a scale of 1 to 36, and the average of these four scores will make up your composite score. The ACT doesnââ¬â¢t have an incorrect answer penalty, so your raw score on each section is just the number of questions you get right. Any questions you answer incorrectly or omit will not count towards your score.English has 75 questions, Math has 60, Reading has 40, and Science also has 40. Check out this sample conversion chart to see how raw scores are converted to the final scores on a scale of 1-36: (note that different tests have different raw score to scaled score conversion charts, but this is generally the right idea). The ACT also has an optional essay, but the Writing section will not impact your composite score or any of your test subscores. You will get a score from 2 to 12 on your essay in four different assessment categories. Your total Writing score will be out of 36 just like the other sections. The ACT gives you an English Language Arts (ELA) score as well, which is the average of your English, Reading, and Writing subscores, but again, this doesnââ¬â¢t factor into your final composite score. Average ACT Scores The national average composite ACT score for the class of 2014 was a 20.Average scores for subsections were: English: 19-20Math: 19-20Reading: 20-21Science: 20-21 If youââ¬â¢re scoring in this range, youââ¬â¢re already scoring higher than 50% of students who take the ACT and will have a good shot at getting into many colleges.Keep in mind, however, that national averages might not be the most relevant to your individual situation. You should look up the average scores for schools youââ¬â¢re interested in to figure out what target scoreto shoot for.If youââ¬â¢re hoping to attend a very selective school, you might need to set your sights on a score in the 34-36 range. At MIT, for example, the 75th percentile composite ACT score for admitted students in 2014 was a 35.When you look at the averages for your school of choice, you should try and aim for the 75th percentile score (higher than 75% of admitted students)because it will give you the best chance of admission. Also keep in mind that someschools want you to submit the ACT Writing score, and some donââ¬â¢t care about it.This is an important factor to take into account both when studying and when deciding whether to sign up for the ACT with or without Writing. MIT: A lush sanctuary where geeks can run free Studying for Your Score Goals You might know where you fall in terms of your ACT score range if youââ¬â¢ve already taken the test.If not, try out a practice test (with appropriate time constraints!), and see how you do.If you find that you still need to improve your scores quite a bit, donââ¬â¢t worry! If you come up with a solid study plan, you should be able to get them up where you want them to be by the time the test rolls around. Iââ¬â¢ll give some brief guidelines below about how long you should study for different point improvements. For more info check out our complete study plan for the ACT and a guide I wrote on how long you should study. Iââ¬â¢m Looking to Improve by 1-2 Points This is a very doable goal, even if you start studying only a couple months in advance of the test.Improving 1-2 points should take around 20 total hours of studying. This means that if you study for about two hours every week for two months, you should be able to meet your score goals. If you want, you can even space out your studying for a few more months so you only have to devote an hour a week to ACT prep. Iââ¬â¢m Looking to Improve by 4 Points This is a pretty significant improvement, so youââ¬â¢re going to have to put in a bit more time.A four point improvement usually means around 40-50 hours of studying. You could choose to start studying two months in advance and plan out five hours a week if you prefer longer, more intense study sessions. If youââ¬â¢d rather spread it out more, try studying for two hours a week for five or six months instead. Iââ¬â¢m Looking to Improve by 6 or More Points This level of improvement is going to require a lot of hard work. For a score increase of six or more points, youââ¬â¢ll most likely need 150+ hours of study time. This means starting early and committing to study sessions every week.If you start studying six months before the test, schedule out five hours a week to devote to ACT prep. You should also remember that your studying needs to be high quality in order for you to see results! This means figuring out what types of questions cause you problems and then practicing similar questions over and over. You'll have to take the time to really understand your mistakes before you start to see positive changes in your scores. Summary Here are some of the main points you should remember about ACT scoring: The ACT gives you a composite score on a scale of 1 to 36 There are four subtests in English, Math, Reading, and Science, and each is also scored from 1 to 36 These four tests are averaged to make up your composite score The average ACT composite score is around a 20 nationally To figure out the score range you should be aiming for, look up the 75th percentile scores of admitted students for schools where you plan to apply. This will give you a better sense of how much time you should devote to studying.Even if the gap between your current scores and your goal is pretty large, with enough planning and focused studying, you should be able to beat the test! What's Next? ACT Score Choice and Superscoring are two policies that might impact which of your scores colleges see. Read more about what they are and what they mean for you here and here. Still not sure whether you should take the ACT or the SAT? Learn more about which one is best for you. For more information on ACT scores, read this article on how to get and interpret your results. Analysis Of Abe Kobos The Red Cocoon Essays - Oddworld, Kb Abe
Analysis Of Abe Kobo's The Red Cocoon Essays - Oddworld, Kb Abe Analysis Of Abe Kobo's The Red Cocoon Generally speaking, the purpose of most forms of artistic expression such as literary art, music, or art itself is a mode by which the author can express him/herself with. They use their respective skills and/or interests to convey feelings or thoughts on any given topic. Short fiction is by no means exempt from this. Many writers use their literary skills to express dreams, aspirations, opinions, or even political viewpoints. In order to make a dertermination of a probable origin for a story, research into the authors life and beliefs most likely will prove benefical. With this in mind, Abe Kobos story The Red Cocoon seems to be a prime example of an author expressing his political viewpoints and his personal conflicts with society through literature. Given this, researching his life and political stance might help to support or negate such an assumption. The Red Cocoon begins with a man walking down a street discussing with himself the problem of not having a house to go home to. The narrator, who is also the main character, jumps abruptly from topic to topic throughout the story, but this reoccuring theme of the lack of a house seems to be a central idea. As the narrator comtemplates, he wonders if he has just forgotten his house and proceeds to knock on the door of a random house to find out if this is what has happened. After he has explained his plight to the woman who answers the door, he begins arguing with her over having proof that it is not his house. Shortly thereafter, the narrator begins to ponder wether or not things such as concrete pipes or park benches are his house. Deciding that they are on their way to belonging to someone or that they belong to everyone and not just one person, he begins to wonder if anything exsists that belongs to no one. At the end of the story, he finds that one of his legs begins to unwind in to a silk thread and wrap him up in a cocoon. Abe Kobos story is quite abstract and seems to have little meaning. In fact, that is just the opposite. After reading some information about Abe Kobo, the story seems to take on a new meaning. Abe Kobo is considered to be one of the leading authors during the post-WWII era of Japanese history. Many of his works use what was then radical artistic methods of literature (Abe Kobo). In his early childhood, Abe was living in Manchuria which was occupied by the Japanese at the time. Being born in Japan, altough Abe felt strong ties to the chinese, he was left feeling like an outsider and rejected by both societes. After the war, Abe became more and more antinationalist and was interested in marxism and communism. Soon, he even joined the Japanese Communist Party (Abe Kobo). He was quite involved in political issues at this time and many of his early writings preceding the early 60s deal with his issues about society says Clerk and Seigal in Modern Literatures of the Non-Western World (136) . With this information about Abe Kobo, an interpretation of The Red Cocoon emerges with heavy political and social tones. The narators central problem of attempting to find out why he does not have a house seems to point to not only Abes feelings of isolation during his childhood, but also his socialist political viewpoints at the time. The Red Cocoon was written in 1949, a period of Abes life when he was a strong political activist (Clerk and Seigal, 136). Utopian marxist or communist views on society center around a flat heirarchial structure where no one is more powerful or of a higher class than any other. The property of the country is reffered to as property of everyone and ownership is somewhat denounced in the strictist forms of the political stance. Abes character in The Red Cocoon seems to be having problems with ownership of houses and other pieces of property. The question is asked, Even if it isnt mine, cant there be just one thing that doesnt belong to anyone? This quest ion appears to have socialist undertones

How effective were Jim Crow Laws Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
How effective were Jim Crow Laws - Assignment Example In fact, freedom that the black population had once obtained meant practically nothing with such a system in law. Jim Crow laws were elaborated as a system of segregation and discrimination of African Americas, practiced in the southern states and some of the border states. These were laws which separated people of color from the white population and restricted contacts between them in various public places, schools, jobs, and housing. They were totally based on the supremacy of whites. If to talk about the origin of the name of the laws, it comes from a minstrel character Jim Crow, popular in the early 1800s. This is still unclear how, but the characters name Jim Crow became widely associated with the laws, customs and etiquette, which promoted segregation of African Americans from the 1870s to the 1960s (Pilgrim, 2012). Jim Crow laws turned to be especially effective if to take electoral system into consideration. The key idea was to decrease the number of black voters. First of all, it is worthy to mention poll taxes, which required people to pay a fee to register for voting. A lot of poor people could not afford this, which is why most African Americansà andà Native Americansà had no opportunity to vote, as well as poor whites. Blacks were also denied the right to vote on the basis of grandfather clauses. This right was restricted only to those blacks whose ancestors had voted before the Civil War (Pilgrim, 2012). One more device for restricting voting rights was literacy tests. For instance, such a task: ââ¬ËName all the Vice Presidents and Supreme Court Justices throughout Americaââ¬â¢s historyââ¬â¢ (Pilgrim, 2012). Not so many people could cope with it. Finally, white primaries, established by the Democratic Party in the southern states. According to them, only white voters were permitted to participate in elections. This is true that such a strategy turned to be really effective. In Mississippi, for instance, fewer

Change Leader Jack Welch Business Essay
Change Leader Jack Welch Business Essay This paper will take a closer examination at how Jack Welch changed the General Electric Company using a transformational leader style. Welchs strategic were to change the value system at General Electric. Moreover, Jack Welch is considered one of the greatest leaders in corporate business in the 21st century. What has made Welch so successful is his development of a modern model design for his company. Welchs model has escalated the growth of General Electric profits billions dollars in a span of an about twenty years. There is no corporate leader to this date that has shaped the value of their company for shareholders much and as rapidly as Jack Welch has. He created a market that had share running high to make the company worth billion. Welch transformed General Electric, a key giant company during the industrial age in American into thriving company modern day company that is highly competitive globally. The key to all of Welchs success is his ability to relate to people in an in formal matter. He has protected communicating across the organization informally with his chain command and subordinates alike. Moreover, Welchs charismatic leadership style and his aggressiveness when he attended meeting and events has given him the ability to communicated effectively with a very large number of employee across the entire organization. Jacks Welchs Background Jack Welch was born in 1935 in Salem Massachusetts (Abetti, 2006). Welch received his undergraduate, Masters And Ph. D degrees all in the field of Chemical Engineering. Moreover, in 1960, Welch began his career with General Electric as a Chemical Engineer. According Abetti (2006) to the General Electric Company has been a part of history as far back as the development of new light technology starting with Thomas Edison becoming one of the largest organizations around the World over. However, as time went by General Electric begin to make their employees push in the development of product to in front of their competitive. One executive who had the leadership ability to do this was Jack Welchs (Abetti, 2006). His leadership is considered true transformation leadership. He created a vision base on organization values. Welch efforts has help reform the structure of General Electrical management by cutting the middle management staff members. Jacks Welchs Strategy Jack Welchs strategy was first getting his followers to see the big picture where General Electric was heading in the future. The whole time as CEO, he delivered his messages repeat to reinforce them. Them by handwritten directly to the employee this method has inspired many of the organization. Welch is known to spend most of his time in dealing with issues with employees. He personal knows over 1000 employee in the at all level in the company and this is by a first name bases (Amernic, Craig, Tourish, 2007). Next, he created a completely new organization culture by restructuring the hierarchy of nine management levels in a simple structure that was more cost effective. Welch new that many of his senior leadership would question his policies. However, the key to his plan was to stick with the plan and policies, regardless how subordinates felt.
